You feed adult dogs twice a day and that is regardless of the breed.

The reason being spayed adds to the weight gain potential is that they are more prone to hypothyroid. Have your dog checked if she gains weight for no reason, no change in diet or activity, if she becomes lethargic, or you see a noticeable change in her coat and/or skin.

Additionally, Goldens (and labs) tend to have a naturally lower functioning thyroid so even left intact they can become fat if you’re not careful.

Our Goldens are also on LID salmon and sweet potato kibble. We are very careful to measure their food out for each meal, according to the weight they should be. One is hypothyroid. Within 6 months of starting her pills, with no other changes by us, she was back to her desired weight. One gets 3 cups twice a day, one gets 1 cup twice a day (she’s very small for a Golden).

We don’t free feed our dogs. They would eat until they explode. Goldens can be gluttons.
